The Early Mail - Variety Race Day - 17th July 2016
R1 RIKLAN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SERVICES MAIDEN 110m 12:35
The first on the Variety Race Day card has a field of eleven to go over the short course. War Pass mare BRITELLA (6) has been transferred to George Grljusich for her eleventh career start. The four year old brings the best form to the race and has drawn the inside for her assignment today. Clint Johnston-Porter who brought up 100 winners for the 15/16 racing year last week at the track will be aboard. David Harrison sends FOXY ROYALE (9) to the Goldfields today in an attempt to break maiden status. The Patronize three year old has been racing fairly in three year old company. Ben Paterson will pilot the filly from barrier two. Craig Wright has elected to add the blinkers to THIS FOX ROCKS (7) today. The Flying Pegasus three year old finished close up last start when finishing fifth behind Snitzalong. Expect her to settle on speed. UNWANTED LASS (8) raced keenly last start which affected her chances. The War Chant filly finished close up reeling off a good sectional.
R2 TOADS EQUIPMENT HIRE MAIDEN 1300m 1:12
The second has a field of ten maiden gallopers to go over the 1300m. The Dion Luciani trained PRAYER IN CEE (1) is resuming today and has drawn well for her task today. The Scandal Keeper mare has previously mixed it with some classier types. The three year old has had a trial coming into this so she should be ready to fire. Bunbury based galloper FAROOCHI (6) will have his third start today. The lightly raced four year old has the blinkers added today. The son of Blackfriars had two starts last year before being turned out. The Watkins trained galloper has had two trials coming into today’s event so fitness should be less of a problem. Last start placegetter FINNY BOY (2) has been transferred to the stables of Paddy Bermingham Jnr since his last run. The four year old has drawn well and will benefit from the claim of leading Kalgoorlie apprentice Sarah Bonner. Expect the chestnut to settle midfield. RIDE SALLY RIDE (7) was slightly disappointing last start when well specked. The four year old has drawn wide but can work forward early on if Glenn Smith elects to do so.
R3 KALGOORLIE CASE AND DRILL HANDICAP 2100m 1:49
An even bunch of gallopers will take to the track over the 2100m with the majority of the field stepping up to the staying journey for the first time this preparation. The Jayden Thomas trained JOSIE’S BABE (7) looks one that can run the journey out strongly. The Saxon mare was hitting the line well last start in the final stages when coming from the tail at the top of the straight. M’LADY HALLOWELL (3) comes out of the same event and is well performed this preparation. The Wanted mare will also do her best work late. DARK DEVOTION (1) has hit form but will carry 59kg without a claim. SIR DANDY (4) has claims in the open event. The Viscount five year old normally settles back.
R4 WESTERN DIAMOND DRILLERS HANDICAP 1200m 2:23
The first leg of the Quaddie is a headache for punters. The Brett Pope trained MISHKEBAB (7) flattened out nicely last start at Northam and was just beaten by a couple of faster ones on the day. This assignment looks easier and the draw is favourable. GOLD CLUB (4) was impressive when resuming last start. The Merv Dellar trained three year old finished close up behind form galloper Longschamp. French jockey Matthieu Autier will be legged aboard with the gelding to appreciate the step up to 1200m. MOMENT OF PRIDE (1) is one to keep an eye on coming over from the East. BESANNROSE (2) is looking for three in a row. Tash Faithfull has barrier eleven to deal with.
R5: SHEFFIELDS THE RECREATION & VARIETY CHARITY SPRINT 1200m 3:05
The fifth is the highlight of the day where we get to see MASTER WINKS (6) step up into open company. The Grljusich trained galloper has decimated his rivals since arriving in the Goldfields. He looks hard to beat but expect him to be tested today. MR MOTOWN (1) has to carry 60.5kg today after saluting last start. The galloper is now trained by Peter Fernie and is yet to be beaten in the Goldfields. THE EXPRESS (7) steps back up in class this week after struggling to carry top weight last start. The Rickie Brown trained galloper has won three from twelve over the 1200m. CASINO BELLE (2) is first up but we’ve seen the class he possesses. The Casino Prince five year old has been off the scene almost a year.
R6 GOLDFIELDS VARIETY CHILDRENS CHARITY HANDICAP 1400m 3:43
The sixth is another open class event which oozes class. Lindsey Smith sends REFLECTANCE (4) to the Goldfields today looking for the six year old’s seventh career victory. It’s fair to say that he hasn’t lived up to expectations since arriving from Sydney having twenty-two starts in WA yielding two wins. This is easier than his recent assignments and he hit the line well last start behind Socially Unique. TEMPORISE (1) at his best would win this event. The five year old is just shy of $160,000 in stakes from only sixteen starts. He looks a good Hannans Handicap prospect is owners choose to go down that road. COMANCHE RED (2) continues to finish close up with the big weights. The claim of Kirby is essential to his chances. DELRAY BEACH (6) produced a better performance last start when finishing third. The Exceed And Excel seven year old steps up to the 1400m today.
R7 NEWLAND ASSOCIATES HANDICAP 1400m 4:13
The last on the card has a big field to go over the 1400m. The Paul Smythe trained COCO CASH (3) has been impressive at both starts at the KBRC. The Bel Esprit mare won’t necessarily be suited by the inside barrier but if Jo Azzopardi can keep the deficit minimal coming to the top of the straight she will unleash and be hard to hold out. A BIT SKETCHY (2) disappointed punters last start when there was no apparent reason for her three length defeat. Punters should give the mare another chance as she is a trier. BALROV (8) looks one that will sit on speed and fight on. The Dave Smith trained galloper is only one of a few that possess early speed in the event. The five year old went close last start going down a long head behind Miss Kitwe. INJECT THE VENOM (4) is better suited over further but quite often these middle distance gallopers can give some cheek over 1400m first up.
