The Early Mail - Statewest Group Boulder Cup Race Day - 19th September 2016

R1 YARRADALE STUD TOM SAYERS MEMORIAL MAIDEN 1400m 1:37

The first race on Boulder Cup Day has a field of nine to take to the track where plenty of value will be on offer. The Steve Wolfe trained MUBALOO (2) will have its first start at the track today. The lightly raced five year old sat outside the leader last start at Northam and fought on well going down two lengths. Prior to that the son of Oratorio has finished behind some handy types. With barrier one expect him to settle near the speed. Last start runner-up CORNICELLO (8) possesses early speed and punters can assume she will work forward in the early part. The four year old has been transferred to Peter Fernie since that effort and will be settled in locally now. The four year old will have her fifth start today. Neville Parnham knows how to prepare a winner over the round. Parnham will saddle up GRINDING HARD (7) in the event coming off a fifth at Northam when beaten two lengths. The galloper has just one placing from eleven starts but you can make a case for her finishing close up at her past few starts. REVVING TO WIN (5) can be competitive based on recent form.

SELECTIONS: 2-8-7-5

R2 ROCKTECH HANDICAP 1100m 2:12

The second on the card has a compact field of seven to go over the short course. Peter Fernie has had a brilliant season this year at the KBRC and it appears the spoils can continue with RIKKI TIKKI TAVI (4). The five year old has raced well since arriving in the Goldfields placing on four occasions from five starts including a victory two starts back over the 1100m. Expect the five year old to settle in the back half and hit the line strongly. VONUS (6) produced one of the quickest sectionals on Kambalda Cup day. The Parnham trained galloper was forced to restrain after the start in that event but has a more favourable draw today. Both career victories have been over the 1000m so the 1100m looks to suit. JESTPATIM (5) looks one that appreciated a firmer surface last start when having his KBRC debut. The seven year old failed to figure on the Pearl Coast but produced a handy performance when finishing fourth behind stablemate Pegatego last start. The blinkers have been added for his assignment today. ARSENAL POWER (2) looks an each way chance in the event. The son of Lonhro has been consistent this preparation.

SELECTIONS: 4-6-5-2

R3 WIDDESON’S HIRE SERVICES HANDICAP 1200m 2:46

A progressive bunch of gallopers will line up in the second over 1200m. Top weight PRAYER IN CEE (1) has appreciated racing in the Goldfields finishing in the top three on four occasions from five attempts, including a victory in similar company to that of today two starts back. The Scandal Keeper four year old has to lump the full 59.5kg today with no claim. ADRIAN MAKFI (3) has done a good job with this being his first preparation. The Esperance galloper is honest and is an each way chance. ROTANA BEACH (3) looks one to keep safe. The four year old produced a solid third first up and punters can expect improvement. FORBIDDEN PLANET (2) has raced well early in his career. Good race.

SELECTIONS: 1-3-4-2

R4 DIGGERS & DEALERS SPRINT 1200m 3:22

The first leg of the Quaddie is the feature sprint on the card with a diverse bunch of gallopers to compete. CROWN LAWYER (8) comes to Kalgoorlie today and looks one that will potentially appreciate a firmer surface. The Parnham galloper hasn’t won a race in 680 days but is well weighted today and coming off a good third has to be an each way chance. CROWN SAGA (7) was superb last start when producing an unmatched closing speed. The daughter of Bel Esprit was ridden slightly closer by William Pike who retains the ride today. LORD HATRAS (2) continues to race well for connections. Barrier one will see him sit on speed. COMANCHE RED (1) is a place chance.

SELECTIONS: 8-7-2-1

R5 WORLDBASE HANDICAP 1760m 3:55

The fifth on the card has a field of eight to go over the middle distance of 1760m. DISCOVILLE (2) has been racing well in this sort of company. His four victories have come between 1600m and 1700m. From barrier six expect him to sit midfield and hit the line strong. INJECT THE VENOM (5) has found form leading into race round. The Hala Bek gelding was impressive last start when taking off at the 600m and gobbling up the field defeating Antalya by a neck. BONAVENTURE (4) is having his fifth start this preparation today. The Churchill Downs seven year old will be ridden by William Pike coming off a third placed performance. Esperance mare CAROB (6) got the chocolates last start at a big price. Keep her safe with Turner aboard again.

SELECTIONS: 2-5-4-6

R6 STATEWEST GROUP – BOULDER CUP 2100m 4:25

The time-honoured Boulder Cup is race six on the card with a field of thirteen to go over the 2100m. Master trainer Fred Kersley will saddle up Group 1 winner IHTSAHYMN (1) in the Cup. The Kingston Town winner has class on his side and is proven with weight on his back winning Group 3 Strickland Stakes in June this year. He looks the one to beat coming off a good fourth in the Idyllic Prince Stakes last start on a wet track. TAHGEO JAY (12) was eye-catching in the Coolgardie Cup when finishing fifth. The Fernie trained galloper settled well back due to a wide gate. He has drawn barrier four today and should settle closer to the speed before extending at the top of the straight. Coolgardie Cup runner-up GRAND REWARD (7) has exceeded expectations this preparation. He will have the services of the State’s leading jockey William Pike. DON’TGETCAUGHT (4) deserves another chance after failing to settle last start.

SELECTIONS: 1-12-7-4

R7 JOHN MATTHEW & SONS HANDICAP 1600m 5:00

The last on the card has a Class 2 field to go over the mile. Last start winner TRAP FOR FOOLS (8) looks the one to beat coming off a dominant maiden performance. The chestnut has drawn the inside today and should ascertain the lead easily. Expect Smith to rate him well out in front and prove hard to run down. SYLVA TERRE (7) has found form over her past couple of starts. The Patronize mare has drawn well and should sit midfield before being bottled up for her run to the line. Brad Parnham will ride the four year old today. Top weight KOSTYASILCH (1) is coming off a third at Northam last start when beaten three lengths behind Witness In Court. The five year old has placed at all of his past five starts. MY NAME IS SUE (4) is another that comes off an impressive maiden victory last start. William Pike will ride the son of Casino Prince once again.
