Queenie on the seven day backup

Locally based trainer Craig Wright will saddle up progressive type Queenie O’Lara in the Kalgoorlie College Life Members Handicap on Sunday.

The light raced four year old has taken to Kalgoorlie racing with aplomb recording two wins and two seconds since arriving in the Goldfields in May.

Wright is confident that the daughter of Blackfriars will account for herself well over the sprint distance of 1100m which she is yet to be unplaced over.

Wright has engaged leading jockey Daniel Staeck to ride Queenie O’Lara who has ridden the mare at her past two starts.

Queenie O’Lara will be on the seven day back up after finishing second behind local form-horse Rikki Tikki Tavi last start.

“She (Queenie O’Lara) came through the last run good, her form is hard to fault”

I’ve previously backed up on seven days before with her and she won so I was not overly concerned to do it again”

Drawn gate three, Wright is looking to employ a change of tactics and have her sit off speed as he believes this is important as she steps up in class.

“There is a lot of speed in the race, this time I think we will take a sit”

“A three year old filly in this company will find it hard to do it at both end of the race so if there’s going to be a race where she can take a sit this will be it”

“Taking all of that into account, the decision will ultimately end up with Staecky (Dan Staeck)”

Wright also has Tinker Tailor engaged who has returned to racing in good fashion this preparation with two places from two starts.

The five year old mare will be subjected to dramatic step up to the mile after finishing third to Pivarnick last start over 1200m.

Wright made the decision to step her up as he found her last run dour and believes the step up will assist her chances.

“She seems to go well fresh and then tapers off quick”

“Originally she would jump run and lead, but I have been spending time on her trying to get her to settle in her races”

“Now that I think she will, she can step up to the mile”

Former leading KBRC apprentice of the year Lucy Warwick will pilot Tinker Tailor from barrier two.

Wright has had a successful start to the season with five winners, and will also saddle up Blazing Asset (Race One), Butterfly Kiss and Vonus (Race Five) tomorrow.
