Star Trader Lights It Up For Dellar by The Gurkha
Star Trader’s brilliant win on ANZAC Day may be a portent of things to come for local trainer Merv Dellar as he manages a frustrating run of injuries with his team of horses.
Dellar paid $10,000 for Star Trader at a recent Bob Peters reduction sale and the maiden win by the full brother to stable star Intimidator could not have been more impressive.
Young English jockey Andrew Heffernan rode the former Grant Williams trained gelding with wonderful judgement, sitting back in the field on the rails from a wide draw, before gaining inside runs in the straight to win, going away from his opposition.
“He certainly gave Star Trader a gun ride.” Dellar told The Gurkha “We had been riding him in trials and track work with the plan of teaching him how to chase, similar to his brother Intimidator.”
“Unfortunately, Rusty Hanson led on him first up and that wasn’t in the plans. From his wide draw on ANZAC Day, Andrew didn’t have too many options but to go back and ride for luck.”
Star Trader enjoyed a miracle run along the rails, before Heffernan took a narrow gap between runners close to home and zoomed to the line, clear of Extreme Silence and Car Park in a desperate finish.
“I purchased him because of his breeding, being a full brother to Intimidator. He is lightly raced and he will improve again fitness wise following that win. He will start again this Sunday over 1200 metres and he looks progressive enough to enjoy a good season up here.”
Star Trader is by Flying Spur from the deceased Key Business mare Cool Business who is also the dam of the promising Peters owned three year old Shining Knight by Blackfriars.
Cool Business was a classy sprinter, winning the Listed HG Bolton Sprint in 2002 amongst her 13 career victories. Her full sibling was the smart Hot Shot Brother who included the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes in his six wins from 16 career starts.
“Star Trader hails from a really good family which you expect from Bob Peters bred horses. I also bought Moon Raider from his reduction sale and she was developing into a real bargain buy but unfortunately she went in the wind, following an impressive trail performance a couple of weeks ago.”
“We only paid six thousand dollars for her. She will have the operation performed at Murdoch this week and hopefully will come back in good shape.”
Moon Raider is by Canny Lad from the Geiger Counter mare Moonfire the dam of WA St Leger winner Moonlight Bay, Divine Dancer and the impressive Catbird mare Moonbound.
“That’s the way it goes- I have had injury concerns with Miss Baton Rouge following an unfortunate racing incident on April 12. Aint No Saint went well last start but needs a let up following a long campaign.”
Dellar has also been busy rebuilding his stable and has purchased some well-bred younger horses from the east coast and Perth.
“Archie’s Dream, a lightly raced four year old from the Mick Kent yard has just arrived with some pretty handy Victorian Provincial form behind him.”
“Albertani is a sparingly raced three year old, formerly trained by Dan Morton. He is a son of Snitzel who has a good third to Democratism on his CV.”
“Hilarian is a former Darley three year old by Commands who has completed seven weeks pre training with Richard Rice and he is doing most things right at this stage.”
The stable star Intimidator will be back at the races on Sunday and Dellar expects the gelding to bounce back from some poor form in the Metropolitan area earlier this year.
“He loves it up here and won’t take long to find his old form.” Dellar concluded.
