Trend Buckers by The Gurkha
On a day dominated by on-speed winners Zubizaretta and Kalahanhi bucked the trend and posted wins by finishing on strongly from the rear.
Veteran jockey Russell Hanson was seen at his best aboard the Paul Smythe trained Zubizaretta, scything his way through the field to claim the unlucky Pattie Me Lass right on the line to win by a nose.
The Paul Smythe trained Galileo gelding is better known as a staying type, having won last year’s Tattersall’s Cup and when he dropped back in trip after finishing 12.5 lengths from Morsecodian (1600m) last start, most punters had put the pen through his chances.
Kalahanhi continues to race as one of the most in-form middle distance gallopers in the area.
Previous to Sundays nail biting win over Morsecodian the son of Scenic had finished second to Black Tycoon after beating the same gelding at their previous meeting.
Trainer George Grljusich has Kalahanhi in top form and the continual clashes of these middle distance horses will be a highlight of the Golden City Motors Stayers Series leading into the Goldfields Tattersall’s Cup (2300m) on August 19.
