Fernie Back On The Boards by The Gurkha
The win by Zedream in the John Tieri Bookmaking Handicap (1100m) broke a run of 48 runners without a winner for leading trainer Peter Fernie and got his title defence hopes back on track, after being winless since Uma Park won on June 17.
It had been a dry July for Fernie but he quickly found his mark by training Master Beckett to win the following race the MM Electrical/Data Supplies Handicap (1400m).
The stable apprentice Kevin Bohorun rode both winners for Fernie taking his tally to five winners for the season.
“Kevin rode both of the winners extra well. Zedream freshened up nicely since her last start win and just enjoyed the right run behind the speed.” Fernie said “She should continue to race well in the next few weeks.”
“Master Beckett has been a bit of a problem at his past few starts. I took the tongue tie off him and kept him to swimming all week with the drop back in distance in mind.”
“We may look to keep him around the 1400 metre distance range but I have no doubts about his ability.”
While Fernie has farewelled the well performed Scenic Park who finished a game second to Zedream before returning to the city stables of Kellie Grantham he believes the former Lou and Dion Luciani trained Memphis Playboy will do a good job in taking her place.
“He did a good job when narrowly beaten by Red Destiny last start and has worked well since entering my stables.”
“Expect Morsecodian to be a little sharper back at the mile on Sunday and both Uma Park and Walk By My Side are close to winning.”
